• General Job Purpose: Ensure the safe, orderly, and efficient flow of air traffic by
maintaining safe separation between aircraft and preventing collisions or delays.
• Key Responsibilities: Monitor aircraft positions via radar and visual observation;
issue clearances (e.g. takeoff and landing instructions) to pilots to maintain safe
separation.
• Key Responsibilities: Coordinate with other controllers to hand off flights; provide
pilots with weather or hazard updates; and handle emergencies swiftly to ensure
safety.
• Essential Skills: Excellent communication, quick decision-making, and the ability
to stay calm and focused under pressure; strong teamwork skills are critical.
• Requirements: Must undergo rigorous training and meet strict certification criteria
(including aptitude tests, medical fitness, and background clearance) before fully
qualifying as a controller.
• Training: Formal training programs typically span ~1–2 years, combining classroom
instruction and supervised on-the-job experience, followed by a provisional
“student” period before full certification.
• Working Conditions: Operates in airport control towers or radar centers; 24/7
rotating shifts (including nights, weekends, holidays) are common, and the work
demands constant focus in a high-stress environment.
